Bake sale
On the 21st of March 2014 Interact held one of our amazing bake sales to raise money for our exchange student Paola. She has entered the City to Surfers Bike Ride and all the money from this event goes to Father Chris Riley's Youth off the Streets program.
Member of our Interact club baked all sorts of treats; cupcakes, slices, cookies and tarts to name a few. They were sold at recess and lunch to girls in the playground for prices ranging from twenty cents to two dollars. The baked goods were also taken by pairs of girls to other parts of the school to be sold to students sitting elsewhere.
We raised $305.45 from this day and had lots of fun too! Paola was able to add this sum to her other sponsorship allowing her to enter the bike ride though which the money will go to helping local youth in need. Thank you to all the girls who bake and helped out on the day, your efforts are much appreciated. Stay tuned for Interact's next bake sale so you can be part of the action!

Denny Foundation fundraiser
The DENNY Foundation
The DENNY Foundation is committed to social responsibility and exists to develop and auspice effective, holistic solutions to aid in the relief of poverty; and to support and advocate for individuals and families affected by: mental illness, depression, drug and alcohol addiction, and loss by suicide. The DENNY Foundation was established after the death, through suicide, of Dennis (Denny) Purcell. Denny was just 25 years of age and battled, for most of his short life, with mental illness, behavioural problems, isolation, and addictions. In all of its activities, The DENNY Foundation anchors its work in a constructive, strength-based philosophy; focusing on key issues in the community which embody the expertise of the Foundation and its professional team. Information from http://www.dennyfoundation.org/ Interact club has decided to support this foundation through a Cadbury Chocolate fundraiser. When you see girls selling chocolate around the school, enjoy a treat knowing your money is going to a good cause! |
SCARF tutoring
So often in schools these days we hear so much about people in need, refugees seeking asylum, requiring assistance to commence a new life. Yes we hear about it but what can we do? The answer quite simply, for our school, is SCARF homework assistance through the interact organisation. Through this program we become people of action rather than people of knowledge. Every Wednesday St Mary's sends students to help tutor children who have sought refuge in Australia; Maths, English, reading, History, we help them with anything they need. It's such a rewarding program allowing us to reach out in a simple fashion and help those who really need it! Ask any one of the girls who have gone to SCARF and they will all tell you that it's something they enjoy doing, after all it's such a delight to be around the lovely students for an afternoon. SCARF is an extremely worthwhile organisation and I count myself lucky to have been able to count myself as someone who has really helped them out.
